Do You Need a Dietitian for IBS or Bloating?

Consider booking with a dietitian if you:

  • feel bloated most days
  • avoid foods because you’re scared of symptoms
  • have unpredictable bowels that affect work or social life
  • feel uncomfortable after almost every meal
  • suspect IBS but aren’t sure
  • have already tried “everything” without results

If you have unintentional weight loss, severe pain, anemia, or blood in stool, see your physician promptly; these require medical assessment before nutrition therapy.

What Is IBS and Why Symptoms Don’t Show Up on Tests

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gut condition commonly involving:

  • abdominal pain
  • bloating
  • diarrhea, constipation, or both

It doesn’t show up on a scope or blood test, which is why many people are told, “everything looks normal,” despite real symptoms.

A dietitian helps you:

  • identify food triggers
  • structure meals to calm the gut
  • reduce symptoms without being overly restrictive
  • improve diet quality and gut health

Why am I so bloated all the time?

Bloating can be caused by many factors, including:

  • eating patterns (speed, timing, meal size)
  • inadequate fiber or sudden fiber increases
  • constipation
  • gas-producing carbohydrates
  • carbonated beverages
  • stress and gut-brain interaction
  • under-fueling and irregular eating
  • hormonal changes

The key is identifying your specific drivers, not cutting every food that ever caused gas.

What a gut-health dietitian actually does

When we work together, we don’t just remove long lists of foods.

We:

  • review symptoms and patterns
  • look at bowel habits & stool consistency
  • assess fiber, fluids, caffeine, and meal timing
  • trial structured nutrition strategies
  • screen for under-fueling patterns
  • consider stress and gut–brain connection
  • collaborate with your physician as needed

The goal is less guessing, more clarity, and the least-restrictive diet possible.

Do you need to cut out gluten or dairy?

Not necessarily.

Many people remove major food groups and still have symptoms because:

  • the root cause wasn’t addressed
  • constipation wasn’t treated
  • portion/timing were the real triggers
  • FODMAP pattern wasn’t identified properly

We only eliminate foods when necessary and strategic, and we always aim to reintroduce them whenever possible.

Low FODMAP: Do you need it?

The Low FODMAP diet can be incredibly helpful for IBS, but:

  • it should be done with a dietitian
  • it is not meant to be long-term
  • the most important phase is reintroduction

I can guide you through:

  • structured elimination
  • systematic reintroduction
  • personalization without unnecessary restriction

You do not need to stay on Low FODMAP forever.

Nutrition Support for Constipation & Diarrhea

Nutrition can significantly improve:

  • chronic constipation
  • loose stools and urgency
  • alternating bowel patterns

Depending on symptoms, strategies may include:

  • fiber type & dosage adjustments
  • hydration and electrolytes
  • caffeine timing
  • meal spacing
  • gut-directed eating behaviors

Small changes often make a big difference.

Supplements for IBS: What Helps and What Doesn’t

Some supplements may help IBS and bloating, but they should be selected carefully.

We may discuss

  • soluble fiber supplements
  • probiotics (strain-specific)
  • peppermint oil capsules
  • magnesium types
  • digestive enzyme considerations

The right choice depends on your symptoms and history, supplements are not one-size-fits-all.
