Are Registered Dietitians covered by insurance in Ontario?

In Ontario, dietitian services are often covered through:

  • workplace health benefits
  • private insurance plans
  • student health benefits

Coverage varies by plan, but many people have $300–$1,000+ per year allocated to Registered Dietitian services.

Some plans cover:

  • a fixed dollar amount per year
  • a percentage per visit (ex: 80%)
  • a set number of appointments

And the best part is you do not need to be sick to use the benefits. Prevention and performance nutrition often qualify. But becasue coverage varies significantly, it’s best to check with your provider about what’s covered. I’ve outlined how to do it below.

Are “nutritionists” covered?

Important clarification:

In Ontario, “nutritionist” is not a regulated title, meaning that anyone can use it even without any nutrition knowledge.

Because of this:

  • most plans do NOT cover unregulated nutritionists
  • some may use confusing wording like “nutritional counseling”
  • the safest covered title is Registered Dietitian (RD / RDN)

Dietitian (protected title) is an important distinction that matters for reimbursement.

Which insurance companies cover dietitians in Ontario?

Coverage depends on your specific policy, but many plans from the following insurers include Registered Dietitians:

  • Sun Life
  • ManulifeCanada
  • LifeGreen
  • ShieldBlue Cross
  • DesjardinsGroupHealth

If you’re not sure whether your plan includes dietitian coverage, checking only takes a minute.

How to check if your benefits cover a dietitian (exact script)

Call or log in to your benefits provider and ask:

  • “Do I have coverage for Registered Dietitian services?”

If they need more detail, you can add:

  • Is coverage per year or per visit?
  • What dollar amount is covered per year?
  • What percentage per visit is covered?
  • Do I need a physician referral?

You can also ask your HR department if you have coverage or if it can be added during your next benefits renewal.

Do you need a doctor’s referral?

Most plans, do not require a referral but some do. If your plan needs one:

  • book a brief appointment with your physician or nurse practitioner
  • ask for a referral for Registered Dietitian services
  • I can provide referral wording if needed

How reimbursement works (step-by-step)

Here’s the usual process:

  • you book and attend your session
  • you pay at the end of the appointment

You receive a receipt with:

  • my name
  • credentials (Registered Dietitian)registration number

then:

  • you submit the receipt online through your insurer
  • your plan reimburses you according to your coverage terms

Some plans reimburse within 24–72 hours.

What dietitian services are usually covered?

Insurance often covers all dietitian support including:

  • weight loss or weight management
  • sports and performance nutrition
  • high blood pressure or cholesterol
  • prediabetes and insulin resistance
  • IBS, constipation, bloating
  • healthy eating and habit building
  • post-pregnancy nutrition
  • muscle gain or recomposition

Coverage doesn’t usually depend on your goal. It depends on the provider being a Registered Dietitian.
